Each gondola is handcrafted from 280 separate pieces of wood, using eight different varieties — oak, larch, fir, lime, cherry, walnut, elm, and mahogany. The process takes months and requires master shipwrights who belong to an ancient guild, working in the traditional squeri, or gondola workshops, such as the famous Squero di San Trovaso.
No two gondolas are the same. They’re built slightly asymmetrical — the left side longer than the right — allowing the gondolier to row with a single oar and maintain balance. The design is an engineering marvel perfected over centuries.
Then there’s the elegant ferro, the distinctive metal ornament at the bow. Its six forward-facing prongs represent Venice’s six districts (sestieri), while a curved backward prong symbolizes the island of Giudecca. Above them, a stylized “S” recalls the sinuous bends of the Grand Canal, crowned by a small semicircle that nods to the Doge’s cap.

Over time, the number of gondolas decreased dramatically. Today, only around 400 licensed gondoliers remain — a prestigious position passed down through generations, protected by Venice’s strict maritime guilds.
